HP Photosmart 945
 

I've got a HP Photosmart 945 that I'm trying to connect to my debian testing 'jessie' AMD 64 system. I'm having a few issues..normally I just keep on plugging through til I find a solution, but this one is proving more difficult than usual.

I've tried installing gphoto2, and gtkam. Neither seem to be able to find the camera. Gtkam gives me a 'Could not initialize camera' message, even when started as root. gphoto2 --auto-detect gives me this output-

I've tried in 'Digital Camera' mode (PTP) and in 'Disc Drive' mode (MSDC).

cat /var/log/syslog output (In PTP mode, editied down to the bit that I think is about the camera)-

I've also given a shot at modifing the /etc/fstab. Which I seem to have no only failed to get the camera going with, but I've also created an error in fstab.

Snce I've only ever needed to mod /etc/fstab a few times before, I'm guessing thats where I've gone wrong. But rather than making an even bigger mess I though I'd throw it out to the forum, maybe someone has a better idea than me. I've got very little experience with digital cameras, and theres got to be someone with more expereicne than me here. Any hints?

I just tried a fiji finepix 9500 as well, and I have the same problem, I cant seem to detect it either. But I have gotten it to work 'out of the box' with some otehr distro. Pity I cant remeber which one, but like I said, I rarely play with digital cameras....

Oh, my bad.

I have a Fuji FinePix 3200. I was able to connect to it with gtkam on Slackware --Current, then I wasn't (I think some of the libraries got updated out from under gtkam). I didn't try very hard to fix it--I just pulled out the SD card and stuck it in the card reader, where it mounted just fine.

I can connect to my camera with gthumb on Linux Mint 16 out of the box; it mounts as a PTP device.

I really use cameras so rarely I might just have a play with some of the liveCDs for different distros I have hanging around, and I'm considering buying a multiformat reader. I'd rather not change distros just for a camera I dont use that much, esp. when I've just got debian testign working well.

Another thing I might try is installing KDE4, it sometimes does things a little differently to Xfce....

If I remember tomorrow, I'll test my camera with Debian and let you know. I'm running Sid.

Mostly I use my Debain computer as a file server.

I had a look with a couple of liveCDs.

Aptosid 13.1 AMD64 Xfce- failure.

Siduction 13.1.0 AMD64 RazorQt- worked.

Hmm, I'm going to install and try KDE4 next with no other changes to this install and see what happens.

*edit- kde-plasma-desktop installed, and no joy. Keep trying I spose. It does make what happens on your sid box mofre interesting frankbell ;)

*edit x2- now its just being weird, I sometimes get the 'device connected' (in USB/MSMC mode) but it drops back out before I can do more than copy 1 or 2 pics.....but does seem to work as 'root'...gah, well, at least its progress of some kind.

I do not use the KDE desktop--too many bells and whistles for my taste; I use Fluxbox on that computer. However, I find many KDE applications superior to their Gnome equivalents and I had the HDD space, so I decided just to install the whole ball of wax and be done with it.

I jacked my Fuji FinePix into my Debian box and it did not mount. lsusb saw it, but demesg did not--dmesg detected the PTP device and gave no further details. I might play with it some more tomorrow.

Yeah, thats one of the rewasons why I was a little stumped EDDY1.

I could see both cameras (HP Photosmart 945 and Fuji FinePix 3200) in the gtkam 'add camera' dialog, but it never seemed to work until I installed KDE4.

Maybe thats a red herring, I dont know...I keep poking at it and see what I can figure out.

Sorry that I'm not one of the linux users who can figure this stuff out quickly and easily, I need to really play with things to get my head around things sometimes.....

Did you try digikam ?

Opps, sorry frankbell, your post must haev been made after I hit 'post' myself so I missed it.

Its just odd that before I install kde-plasma-desktop nother worked at akll, not even a root, but afterwards it did, but only as root.

EDDY1- I'll give digikam a try, see what happens, and post the results.

DigiKam actually seems to work, no need for root, etc.

I'll do a bit more testing tomorrow, at 1:15AM after being awake for 20 hrs I'm not sure of anything.....but it seems that its solved the problem. I'll check tomorrow and if its still works I'll mark this thread as solved (only because there is no 'solved but stuffed if I know why!').

No idea what the original issue was, and why digikam works as user when other things only work as root, but maybe I'll figure it out.

Yep, todadys 'I'm awake and sane' test confirms digikam works, no need for root. Pity its so huge, there were a lot of dependancies, but better big and works than smakll and doesnt.
