HP Officejet 4500 - Linux Driver

Hi

My current Hp printer has just gone belly up and trawling around the internet the above printer/scanner/fax etc. has caught my eye.

However is there anyway to ensure before I buy it that there is a Linux driver for it? I realise that HPLIP will probably work but I would really like a machine specific driver if possible so I can get the full potentialof the machine. Presumable a machine specific driver would enable ALL the different parts of the machine (scanner/fax etc.)to work.

Cheers

HPLIP...

For this printer, HPLIP is probably the best you can hope for with linux. Turboprint sells a linux driver for several printers, but seemingly not for this HP model.

Have you considered a Canon model using their linux drivers in case Canon gives you a feature you want that's missing in the HPLIP driver?

The Officejet 4500 is listed as supported by the HPLIP driver, but there are several 4600 models, so check for the one you're considering.

Hewlett-Packard fully supports pretty much every printer they make in Linux with hplip; included with most if not all Linux distributions (or available from the distribution software site or directly from H-P), hplip will most likely do the job for you. The software is device-specific for the printer model you have and works in conjunction with CUPS, the printing system for Linux (and Unix, for that matter) so you do not need machine-specific driver software; hplip provides for all the features of the printer, including scanning and fax, in most cases.

Go take a look at http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/index.html for specifics.

Hope this helps some.

HP Officejet 4500- Linux drivers

To tronanye and thorkelljari

Thanks very much for your help. I'll have a look at the 4600. I have always had HP printers and they have never let me down my current one is about 10 years old so cannot really complain.

Thanks again

I have just purchased this all-in-one(4500) with wireless. Ubuntu 11.10 detected it(wirelessly)and set it up with a couple of clicks from me. All you need to do before hand is set it up to connect to your wireless network. I could not be more pleased.
Scanning and faxing I have not tested and do not really care about as this unit was on sale for similar money to a decent printer.
