HP NETSERVER LPr PII / 450 SERVER linux install Help

Hi People, I have a question regarding this machine HP NETSERVER LPr PII / 450 SERVER. I purchased this machine a week or so ago from ebay. (Surprise Surprise). I know its old but am confident it will serve my needs.
My problem is I cannot install a recent version of Linux. I have Red Hat V9, fedora, SuSe V9.1, SuSe V7.1 on Disks.

The Suse Version 7.1 installs to this machine from the CD Hence I am pretty confident that the installed components work.

I would like to install my registered version od SuSe V9.1 to able update.
However when I boot from CD the machine Hangs/Freezes at the Welcome screen. I Have the same error when I attempt to install the Red Hat and Fedora versions.

I have read finagens "Before you Post" thread and am not sure my situation falls into any categories he explains. I will provide the system spec if required.

What does the older SuSe v7.1 Have that Version 9.1 does not?
or, is it possible/advisable to stick with the 7.1 and update?

Any Ideas

Thanks

Try to install it in text mode;
Code:
Install using the text mode installer. In the first installation screen, press the F2 key,
use the arrow keys to select text mode, then press Enter to select the text mode installer.
Then once it is installed hopefully the modules for your graphics will work.

Boot disk Don't get that far. Gets to the welcome screen prior to screen with install choices.
Is there a key sequence that can be used to invoke text install from CD?
Thank you for replying.

Raid card was the problem. This machine had had HP Netraid-1si card
fitted at some time during its life. The resolution was simple, remove card
and replace. suse v9.1 now installs and is currently updating

Thank you for your time and info
