HP DVD 840b problems: please help
I originally had a post named Can't read burnt DVD's, and I thought hte discs were at fault. I then tried an experiment where I read the burnt data dvd-rw discs on windows...no problem. Then I put it into my Linux running computer, it showed the files, but when I tried copying the files, only some copied, and the display kept showing that it was stalling. After ejecting the disc (no force quit or anything), I put it back into the Linux running computer, and it showed no files or folders, only that the disc had no room for more data. On top of that, I put the disc back into the Windows running computer, and now that shows no files or folders, only htat the 4gb are taken up.
I titled this post after my drive because that is where the problem must lie now. For example: I put in a working disc of Batman (store bought-real DVD movie) and it will play under Kaffeine. Then, again testing, I would eject the disc, reload the tray, and it read again. but then all of a sudden the third time I eject and reload it my system no longer detects a medium to be mounted.
Sometimes it reads a disc as present, sometimes it doesn't. And the one disc that never seems to have troubles is my installation DVD.
Another thing I'd like to mention before I end, I am running the 64-bit version of opensuse 10.2, not the 32 bit. I haven't had any system failures or anything, in fact I've got XGL running and everything looks great. However, I have run into some issues regarding ndiswrapper (the 32 bit windows driver for my card will not run in the 64 bit environment), and I am having trouble with a playstation emulator I'm trying to configure. My point is, is it possible that there is some kind of incompatibility arising from this 64-bit versus 32 bit thing?
One more thing to mention, but I don't want this to be what everyone focuses on when they post suggestions, is that before I rid my computer of Windows, my HP DVD burner was working fine, no problems at all. Once linux was installed, I'm not sure but a couple days or even a couple of weeks in, my drive was making terrible noises like the motor was caught on something, like a loud 'klak'. It has since gone away, but perhaps thats because something finally completely klakked and broke, allowing for some functionality but not total. I am unsure of this because although my Batman dvd does not always appear, when it does, the whole movie does play without a problem.
This has been long, but if you read this the whole way then thank you, and please help. I see the great potential of linux, but I have to say as much as I hate windows, I am on the verge of switching back, and just saying that bothers me, so please help with this one.
