HP dv9850es, CX20561 and HDMI sound

I've got a HP Pavilion dv9850es, with Nvidia MCP65 chipset (snd-hda-intel) and a Conexant CX20561 (Hermosa) codec (it uses snd-hda-codec-conexant). Also, it has a Geforce 8400GS integrated video card with HDMI output.

The software inside that laptop is a Debian 5.0 with kernel 2.6.30-1 and ALSA 1.0.20.

I've connected it to a Philips LCD TV, using HDMI. In Windows Vista I have image and sound (altough I've got to select digital output), but in Linux I've got image but no sound.

I've tried to enable IEC958 digital outputs, but it doesn't work (IEC958 outputs show enable/disable control, but no volume sliders). The aplay -l output is:

Code:
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 0: CONEXANT Analog [CONEXANT Analog]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 1: Conexant Digital [Conexant Digital]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
Using aplay to play samples in 0,0 works, but in 0,1 i can't hear the sound. How can I enable HDMI sound in Linux?

No solution (yet). I've been busy with another laptop, I'll try later.

Hello Zup & Beytu!

Several months ago I reported your/our HDMI Problem as a bug.

Look here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...ux/+bug/389494

It would be very nice if both of you would add a comment to the bug report.

Maybe sooner or later somebody will help us.

Thanks in advance!

For nVidia motherboard chipsets it is a mixed bag for outputting digital audio through HDMI from what I read from anandtech's site. If HP wired the digital out directly to the chip that combines DVI and digital audio into HDMI or the connection is just a DVI to HDMI connector with out digital audio output. I suggest the following in Mplayer.

mplayer -channels 2 -ao alsa:device=0.1 file

I suggest use "alsamixer -V all" to have access to the full list of controls. One or a few controls might enable digital audio to make the above to work.

Setting up digital audio to always work for every program is a whole different setup. In order for digital audio to work all the time in every program, both /etc/asound.conf.

I only test digital audio over HDMI with an AMD 780G chipset. This was easy even though the ALSA version did not quite support it at the time. The AMD 780G setup digital audio over HDMI as a secondary sound card and aplay stated it as HDMI while the digital audio for the connectors stated as a second device on the first card. The screen that I tested with HDMI is a Sony SXRD rear projection TV. The reliability is not there, but works after playing a video file multiple times to fool the TV electronics that the audio is OK. I think hooking up to a AV receiver that is non-HDCP compliant might give you better luck.

Digital audio in Linux is a trial-n-error. I do not recommend asking Ubuntu users because most of them are technically illiterate.

I have been trying to fix exactly this problem, and giving up, and starting again, for ages. I have just started again and just discovered this thread.

I have hp dv9820ea with mcp65 and cx20561 and aplay -l does the same for me as Zup's above. My alsamixer is really weird. I get two entries for iec958 and two volume sliders for hdmi, as well as master volume. All the volumes are turned up. Sound comes out of the computer speakers but silence comes out of the telly. No error messages. Courtesy of dual-boot, I know it works in W Vista. The only reason I have W Vista is to use hdmi.

I downloaded the hdmi specification and have been blasting verbs at my soundcard with hda-verb.

I was even reading the alsa source-code.

Driving me barmy.

Hello barboolian!

Please add your comment to the bug report I mentioned above (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...ux/+bug/389494). Maybe some fine day somebody will take care of this problem.

This problem occurs in several distros so I sent a bug report to the ALSA people. I also sent one to the Nvidia forum nvnews. That was ages ago.

Can these bug reports be found on the internet? If yes, please add the URLs to my bug report on launchpad. I'm not very optimistic that this will help, but who know's.

If you should decide to "add your name to the list" of my bug report it would be very useful that you click the green text saying "This bug affects XXX people. Does this bug affect you?"

I put a bug report where 0maboy wanted it. They gave me a list of distros to choose from, but Slackware was not on it! Anyway, the bug is in the driver, not the distro.

I gave them a link to the bug report I gave the ALSA lot.

Why could I not see the great Slackware on the list?

opensound

This seems to be a development of the old OSS drivers which works with hda-audio (allegedly).

No good. It compiles and runs without a hitch.

And without making any sound.

I am going to play around with it, though.

Hope is a cruel thing.

I gave up opensound but am now trying again. There is a program that comes with it called osstest which makes noises through the speakers.

It just made a noise through the telly.

Not Armstrong yet, but Gagarin at least.

If I can see X on the telly, any sounds come out of the computer speakers and the telly speakers simultaneously. Don't know how to suppress the computer speakers yet.
