HP Deskjet 3740 Doesn't Work

Hello,

I am trying to get an HP deskjet 3740 usb printer to work on my Fedora core 3 system. I put the driver HP-DeskJet_3740-hpijs.ppd in /etc/cups/ppd. this seemed to make it visible to cups through the html interface. After several hours of fooling around with these settings I tried the system-config-printer program. This set up a print queue named printer, with a queue type of /dev/usb/lp0 HPDeskjet 3740. The printer driver is Raw Print Queue. This did not seem right so I went into /etc/cups/ppd and backed up printer.ppd and copied HP-DeskJet_3740-hpijs.ppd into it. Then I rebooted. If I print a a cups test page from the config program it doesn't do anything.

My kernel is 2.6.10-1.770_FC3.

Here is the part of dmesg that I think may be relevant:

usb 3-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 2
drivers/usb/class/usblp.c: usblp0: USB Bidirectional printer dev 2 if 0 alt 0 proto 2 vid 0x03F0 pid 0x7404
usbcore: registered new driver usblp
drivers/usb/class/usblp.c: v0.13: USB Printer Device Class driver
NET: Registered protocol family 10

Here is the lsusb output:

Bus 004 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 003 Device 002: ID 03f0:7404 Hewlett-Packard
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000

Thanks in advance.

Sincerely,

Mark

Mine is working fine as a network printer.

Get the hpijs driver from the link above and go to http://localhost:631 with a browser to configure it. The original drivers I got only worked on the color printer cartidge and the printer is still configured that way.

The info on my printer from http://localhost:631/printers :

HP DeskJet 3740 Foomatic/hpijs (recommended)
Description: HP DeskJet 3740
Location:
Printer State: idle, accepting jobs.
Device URI: usb://3740?serial=CN4B2151M9045Y/

Hello,

Mine looks like this:

HP DeskJet 3740 Foomatic/hpijs (recommended)
Description:
Location:
Printer State: idle, accepting jobs.
"Ready to print."
Device URI: usb://3740?serial=CN4CB161DD045Y

and it still doesnt work.

I suspect that it has something to do with the redhat printer configuration in Fedora Core 3.

Thanks,

Mark

I had a similar problem with my HP 3650, I found that if you go to the printer configuration and select the queue type above the one that is automatically created (should be dev/usb/lp0 ) plus enable sharing, the printer should work. At least that's what worked for mine.
