Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

HP Deskjet 2540 on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS not working

I downloaded HPLIP Toolbox and clicked on setup.exe from the HP CD and nothing happens. When I have the printer que displayed and I try to print something,
the print job appears in the que for less than a second and then is gone. My Dell Inspiron 537 came with Ubuntu OS on it. I also have an HP external A drive that I can't get to work. Any ideas? Why do I have to log in to LQ more
than once when I use LQ? Thanks.

Right..and nothing WILL happen, since the .exe is a Windows program, which will obviously not work on Linux. You wouldn't expect Windows software to run on a Mac, either.

How did you configure the printer? Where do you see the job come up? And have you tried installing HPLIP (it should be in your repositories/software center), which makes installation and management of HP printers like that MUCH easier.

No, since you don't tell us ANYTHING about what kind of drive it is, what you mean by "can't get to work", etc.

I don't expect Windows software to run on Linux, but with a Windows emulator I thought I would try .exe as a last resort.

As I said above, I did have an HPLIP program installed. My first HP printer pretty much ran right out of the box as did my
second printer - a Canon. So I was surprised that I was having little success with my HP Deskjet 2540. But you saved me from making a huge mistake. I was going to buy a System 76 laptop, but I now plan to buy a Dell laptop because I should have fewer
hardware and software problems with MS Windows. Thanks for showing me that my stupidity was the actual source of my problems.

No idea.
