Red face HP Compaq 6710b Fan running continusely

Hi,

I have HP Compaq 6710b LAPTOP, After about 15-20 seconds of starting of machine its Fan starts running, and continues without stop, however, after some interval it get high speed and then becomes at little bit slow,, but overall running with more than required speed and generates sufficient noise..

Kindly help to get it calm and reduce irritating noise..

Thanx

I have the same model work laptop, but I'm not experiencing that behaviour with (openSUSE 13.1, kernel 3.11.10-25-desktop). As this is a reasonably old laptop, have you checked to make sure the machine is not full of dust, (especially around the vents)?

For reference, I have the following modules loaded
Code:
lsmod|grep fan
fan 13002 0
thermal_sys 36646 4 fan,thermal,video,processor
Which distro are you using? Kernel version?

FWIW, a quick search turned up the following

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=895276

As ferrari suggests, your CPU fan is possibly clogged with dust, fluff etc and needs cleaning.
It may look like the one on this link, in which case no amount of sucking or blowing is going to clear it:

Alternatively the fan could need replacing.

Replacement CPU fan:

Instructions for CPU fan replacement:

If you do decide to do it yourself, make sure that you have the following before you start:
suitable screwdrivers, an anti-static strap, thermal paste such as Arctic Silver 5 and some isopropyl alcohol or similar.

It is important to completely remove the old thermal paste from the heat sink. Also make sure that both mating surfaces are thoroughly clean before applying a small bead of thermal paste and installing the new fan.
