Howto use parted tool

Using Parted tool definitely fulfill your requirement.
#parted
parted)print

o/p:-

[root@www ~]# parted
GNU Parted 1.8.1
Using /dev/sda
Welcome to GNU Parted! Type 'help' to view a list of commands.
(parted) print

Model: VMware, VMware Virtual S (scsi)
Disk /dev/sda: 19.3GB
Sector size (logical/physical): 512B/512B
Partition Table: msdos

Number Start End Size Type File system Flags
1 32.3kB 271MB 271MB primary ext3 boot
2 271MB 4565MB 4294MB primary ext3
3 4565MB 7789MB 3224MB primary ext3
4 7789MB 19.3GB 11.5GB extended
5 7789MB 9936MB 2147MB logical ext3
6 9936MB 12.1GB 2147MB logical ext3
7 12.1GB 14.2GB 2147MB logical ext3
8 14.2GB 16.4GB 2147MB logical ext3
9 16.4GB 16.6GB 206MB logical ext3

(parted)

Now you can see, after "print" on the 2nd line you will get the total size of your HDD, & at the last line of the partition table(9 no.), under "END" column, you will get the total size used by your current partitions. After subtracting(in this case 19.3-16.6), you will get the unallocated space.

I found a very nice ISO that installs on a USB Drive or CD-R that will allow you to do the Parted functions without having your harddrive mounted (which is a requirement for manipulating the partitions.) It is at http://partedmagic.com/ and I personally downloaded it from sourceforce.net with wget. If you boot with the USB or CD-R you can manipulate your partition. For instance, on my old machine, I had one gigantic partition with Windows XP on it. I shrunk that down by 300 gig and installed Fedora 17 on it.
