Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Question HOWTO get HDMI INPUT working on my laptop?

First off, to demonstrate that I have searched for a solution already: YES, my laptop (an Alienware M18x) DOES HAVE an HDMI INPUT port. I have two HDMI ports, and one of them is an INPUT port. I could care less if it doesn't work with HDCP-enabled outputs. I have an Nvidia GPU, and installed the latest proprietary Nvidia driver currently available in the Arch repository.

If anyone has any pointers to any success stories IRT HDMI INPUT (preferably with an Nvidia GPU) in any Linux distribution, I'd appreciate any pointers I could get. I don't know where to start, whether to try v4l or another tool, nor if any such software tooling is even necessary.

Basically, if someone could just tell me the state of HDMI input in Linux, how it's done, or if it's even doable, I'd appreciate it. If someone here is so willing to help me in the endeavor, I'll post the dmesg and lspci output, driver versions, and whatever else might help.

Thanks.

Sounds familiar to what I dealt with before. Try this thread I wrote up:

DISCLAIMER: I only tested this on openSUSE, but since it's nVidia/Xorg settings, it *SHOULD* be portable across distros. Give it a shot.

Thanks, TB0ne, but one problem remains:
There was no mention whatsoever of HDMI INPUT in your post. I appreciate your assistance, and am glad you offered some relevant additions to my xorg.conf, but this is not relevant to my question.

To be clear, I want to enable my HDMI INPUT port to display (on my laptop) the hdmi output from a separate device.
