Howto configure remote control buttons when LIRC is integrated into the kernel?

How do you configure the buttons of a remote control if LIRC is integrated into the kernel and you can't do it in ~/.lircrc and /etc/lircd.conf? It doesn't matter if /usr/sbin/lircd is runnning or not. I get responses in the shell window if I press the numbered buttons but not on any other buttons. It prints "1234567890". If I upgrade to lirc-0.7.0-6.i586.rpm the pause-button causes the volume to rise in mplayer and the record button stops the playback also in mplayer.
