How would I go about installing an external HDD/DVD drive?

Say I got the external HDD or dvd drive. I plug it in, then what? Windows automatically configures things. What do I need to do on SUSE linux?
Is there a tutorial somewhere that I cood read?

Thanks

Your question is a little vague, so it is hard to answer. What sort of drive are you considering? USB, PAR-IDE, SCSI, FireWire? What version of SUSE are you running?

Do you actually have a drive or are you just considering buying one? Do you want to read existing data or format the HDD as a Linux-only drive?

In the best case, your machine will recognise the drive and assign it to a device in /dev (like /dev/sda) and then you can mount the device with a couple of commands. I'm sure YaST has a funky way to set the thing up but I don't know what it is because I'm a Gentoo-using command-line-junkie.
Anyway with a few more details you will get a lot more help!

One of the problems is I dont know what things are important
Surprising, I've been using linux for like 9 years, but dont know squat about administration.

Here goes:
USB DVD writer
Some sort of USB flash drive (maybe firewire if I can get some firewire reader for flash cards)
Firewire HDD

Blank HDD, I would like to partition it into fat/ext3 so that I can "communicate" between windows and linux.

How can I know where the system has assigned the drive?

I'm using SUSE 9.1 pro
