I have been googling around, but didnt find what Im looking for. So I was wondering how to rotate the screen (the output of course, I can turn the monitor myself =) ) 90 degrees, so that I can use the whole width of it(that would be hight, yes?). Im very interested in how to do this with _both_ X(org) and with the bare CLI. I am for the notice using Ubuntu Gutsy prerelease ATM.

I see several uses for this, besides the sheer awsomness of course, although I do not know if it is actually possible on normal screens. Maybe I have to buy one that just is higher than it is wide. But I have seen screens sideways on airports and such, and I would like to believe it is possible under linux (and *BSD's of course).

You should be able to do this in X with the XRandR extension (the first “R” stands for Resize, and the second stands for Rotation). As long as you have the appropriate modules enabled (i.e., XRANDR), and the appropriate utilities (xrandr), you should be able to do this:
As for the framebuffer, I’m not sure of any way to do rotate it. You could always edit fbcon.c
