How to setup UPS device

I am borrowing a UPS device (DataSafe 650VA) from a friend. I plugged the power part into it, but I notice there is a place to plug a 9-pin that is labeled status. Is my computer protected or do I need to have some additional cord that sends status to my computer? Is this cord nessissary in order to setup automated shutdown during power failures?

Is it okay to plug the UPS into a surge-protector outlet strip?

I'm not familiar with that UPS, but have to assume the 9pin connection is a serial connection (ie com port) and will inform the o/s to shutdown in the event of a power failure.

Should be OK to plug into that outlet strip.
