How to set up dail-up modem
I recently bought a Hummingbird usb modem 56k/v.92. I'm using it in XP. I'm not sure what it's called in SuSE or SimplyMEPIS. I know in XP it's called COM6. If you need anymore information just ask and I will do my best to supply it. Thank you.

What happened when you started SuSE after connecting the modem? Did it recognize it? Have you tried dialing out with KPPP?
|
Yes I tried dialing out with KPPP. It told me that no device was connected.

Well I'm nor really shure that the whole thing with a USB modem will work.
Anyway, when you are configuring KPPP in the "Modem tab" there's a "Modem device" entry with a drop down menu. "/dev/modem" is the first entry "/dev/ttyS0" is the second entry (COM1 port) "/dev/ttyS1" is the second entry (COM2 port) ... ... ... There is bunch of other "USB options", try them out and see if Suse will reckognize the modem. Not much of an advice, but worth a try. |
I've tried all of those and I get nothing different. I tried it in MEPIS and discovered a linux manual and instructions for red hat 7.x, 8.0, and 9.0 buried deep down in the cd. I don't understand the instructions because I'm an uber noob. Would they even still be useable since it's red hat? I tried to follow the guide to the best of my ability and the modem would attempt to dial then tell me there was no dial tone. I checked the dial in number and it was correct. I have a feeling that means I'm a little closer.

Yes, I have to wait for a dial tone.

In the kppp modem setup there is a "query modem" option. Did you try that and does the system see the modem?
