I just received my "new" mainboard bought on ebay. Now, I have a little problem using more than 2 channels of audio.
The mainboard has three audio connectors: line in, line out, mic. According to the mainboard's manual, it is possible to re-configure line in as rear out and mic as center/LFE out. In Windows, just open the audio control panel ...
How can I do this re-configuration in Linux ? There is no BIOS setting for that, so I need a piece of software. Setting the PulseAudio configuration to 5.1 Analog output was not sufficient.
The mainboard is an ASUS M4A78LT-M LE with a VIA VT1708S soundchip and I am using Xubuntu 12.04 (64bit).
I found some troubleshooting howtos, but they all were about "no sound at all", "distorted sound", "mic not recognized" etc. nothing about reconfiguring.
I dont have a ASUS M4A78LT-M LE board, and I havent tried one with any linux distro. I wouldnt be suprised if changing the audio jack output in windows then made it work the same with linux distros. Not that I'd suggest buying a copy of windows just to do that...you can get decent 5.1/7.1 sound cards (better than VIA 1708S) for less than the cost of a windows licence.
I do have a board with a VIA VT1708S sound chip (and only 3 audio jacks as well). I was going to do a reinstall on it in the next week anyway, so I'll see if I can get 4/6 channel sound out of it with linux.
@cascade9
It's a micro-ATX mainboard with limited number of expansion slots. And I need all of them for other purposes.
@business_kid
Sadly, no. Neither /etc/alsa nor system-config-sound.
I am currently trying to convince one of my friends to swap mainboards. He has a similar one with dedicated jacks for all speakers and does not use Linux.
I have the alsa-utils installed, but there is no alsaconf. A little web searching showed that many people are asking why alsaconf is missing in Ubuntu ...
