How to power off usb devices at shutdown?
 

Quite simply, windows powers off all my usb devices when it shuts down; linux doesn't.

Is there any way to get linux to do this?

That doesn't make a whole lot of sense. When the computer is shutdown, there is no power to the USB ports. It doesn't matter what OS you are running, then the computer is off, the USB devices are off.

Unless you are asking about something device-specific, like a USB printer powering off when you initiate the shutdown from Windows.

Both the mouse's optical light and usb hub's power light are left on when linux shuts down. The mouse's optical light still brightens when moved just as it does when the computer is powered on.

So from what you're saying, my motherboard isn't being completely powered off when linux shuts down.

This happens with any linux distro that I've used.

That is...very strange.

Does the computer sound like it is actually turning off? Can you hear the HDD and fans spin down, and does the PSU fan stop spinning?

From that video, it doesn't look like the computer is physically powering off; but the screen does go out, which would seem to indicate it has powered down the motherboard.

I assume you have tried just giving it a few minutes to see if they shut off? On my machine, for whatever reason it can take upwards of a minute to actually shutdown the hardware after the OS has stopped running.

When I compiled my kernel, I had the wits to take out power management drivers and shutdown/poweroff commands would not work. All the de-init scripts were executed and the system effectively shut down "System halt." printed on the screen but from there I guess linux just didn't know what to tell the MOBO to make it cut power. Check if your BIOS is up to date maybe? just an idea

My computer completely powers off as far as is usually the case. HDDs spin down; psu and cpu fans, and the case fan which is connected to a spare plug all switch off; computer power light goes out. The usb powered devices lights never go out for as long as the computer is off.

My motherboard's bios is up to date too.

As I say this only happens in linux; windows shuts everything off that is powered through the usb ports.

I have the same problem. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a solution and nobody cares.

The weird thing is, even shutting down by pressing the power button during boot shuts down the usb devices correctly. Only Linux leaves the devices on after shutting down.

I've had the same problem too. When I used to use Windows the USB devices did not receive power after shutdown, now they all stay on regardless of power state. I've tried all the APM and ACPI settings you can imagine and my BIOS does not have any Wake on LAN or wake on keyboard/mouse settings turned on.

I was hoping that the newer versions of the kernel may have some specific setting that I'm missing at compile time that you guys could help me out with. I did notice, though, that as the computer boots and the kernel loads the back-light on my keyboard (and the LED on the mouse) blinks as the USB bus is initialized. This leads me to believe that the kernel is the culprit.

This is an annoyance that I hope is already solved or can be solved soon. Anyone got any suggestions?
