Question how to install the necessary plugins for totem

I tried to open a "wmv" file that a friend sent to me but I got an error message from Totem saying:

"You do not have a decoder installed to handle this file.
"You might need to install the necessary plugins".

What are the "necessary plugins", where are they, and how do I install them?

. I'm really new to Linux and need some real step-by-step instructions. Thanks.

First of all I think your post is in the wrong forum. This should be moved to "software" forum.

Second, you need to tell us which distro you're using, the way plugins are installed vary from one distro to another.
If you're using ubuntu, I encourage you to make a search in ubuntu wiki page, and certainly you will find instructions to install missing plugin.
