How to install IDE to USB converter?

Hello, Slackware current with kernel 2.6.13 here

I'd like to install my new gadget, IDE-to-USB converter but I can't find any tutorial to do that. I gather information from web, but I can't find useful advices. When I connect HDD, I can see in /var/log/messages:

Sep 9 19:35:37 prawniczy kernel: usb 5-1: USB disconnect, address 2
Sep 9 19:36:06 prawniczy kernel: usb 1-7: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 4
Sep 9 19:36:07 prawniczy kernel: scsi1 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices
Sep 9 19:36:18 prawniczy kernel: usb 1-7: USB disconnect, address 4
Sep 9 19:36:18 prawniczy kernel: scsi: Device offlined - not ready after error recovery: host 1 channel 0 id 0 lun 0

Can you help me with installing that? I read that I should have SCSI support and USB Mass Storage compiled in, hdd has to be set in master mode, I also connect cables in order described in instruction attached to converter.
I'd notice, that my USB Pendrive which I connect to the same USB port is working perfectly. What should I do? Please for help and thanks in advance

Is this an external box for an IDE disk? If the USB mass storage driver is working (as it seems yours is) this should work immediately. But I have seen reports that some external USB boxes have problems, and I was pretty careful when buying one recently to get a brand known to work.

Since you already have the latest kernel its hard to know what to suggest. Does Slack give you the option of installing udev to handle pluggable devices?

It's exactly this: http://www.adarnet.pl/product_info.p...ducts_id/10733

I don't know what chipset is used by my converter. When I'm doing lsusb, process "lsusb" hangs up and even kill -9 doesn't help. I have udev installed but how can it help me?

First you should turn on the hard drive. After it has spin up, connect it to the USB port on the computer.

Make sure the modules listed are loaded:
sd_mod
usb-storage

If the ub module is loaded, put in the blacklist file in /etc/hotplug. The module ub should never be used. By typing fdisk -l as root or su you should be able to see /dev/sda

The drive can be set as either master or cable select.
