According to the Draisberghof site, USB_ModeSwitch, included in Ubuntu 13.10, has converted the modem from a CD device to a modem. Plug it in, and try to configure your network connection with NetworkManager. You may have to use information from your Internet provider to make the connection correctly.
When you use the command "lsusb" with Slackware, do you receive the same ID number for the modem(2001:7d01)? If so, it is switched in Slackware also.
