We have a dual-boot system. Our sound card works great from Windows, and the hardware control panel says the sound card is a Yamaha OPL3-SAx.
Under RH9, we keep getting an error on login:
Quote:
Sound server informational message:
Error while initializing the sound driver.
device /dev/dsp can't be opened (No such device)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device
I haven't a clue where to begin here. I've tried the "soundcard detection" control, but it says we have to sound card.
How do I TELL linux that we actually do have a sound card? Where can I get the appropriate drivers?
you need to load the module or recompile you kernel, but you also need to aska redhat user because I was under the impression that redhat automatically did hardware stuff liek that (I do not, and will never use redhat)
I don't want to recompile the kernel. I installed RH9 on another machine, and I didn't have to do a darn thing. Sound just worked. But, that was a friend's computer, and it was a bit older.
I have the same problem, I use RH 8.0. Mine is sound blaster live. From what I've read, I have to install a "driver" and then recompile kernel set up something.. I don't really get it, but I'm trying..
I don't know whether there is another way to set it without kernel..
1) different computer = probably different sound card that had built in or generic driver
2) all hardware drivers in linux have a kernel module (exceptions are rare, but they do exist) if you don't eahter have the module built-in to the kernel, or you do not load it manually then the device is not available for use.
3) if you do not want to compiel the hole kernel (not hard) then download the alsa soundcard drivers from alsa.sourceforge.net
read the howto's and directions. this will make the kernel modules for you, then tell you how to load them. alsa is also the best quality/performance for linux audio.
I use alsa on both my sb-live! and my via onboard and they both work great
I also recompiled my kernel on my first day with linux 5 years ago, before that only windows.. I was also 15years old and by no means a proffessional computer operator
