How to format a DVD+RW?

I know that you can format a DVD+RW in any filesystem so I can randomly add/delete files (like UDF and Windows). I need that to quickly update my RPM collection.
How to do it?
How to format to other filesystem than UDF (or without need to patch the kernel)?

I'd like to know how to format DVD+RW's period. I'm a Linux noob, and I am able to burn DVD+R's but not DVD+RW's using Xcdroast. The tech support guy at Memorex told me my problem was that the DVD+RW's need to be formated before I could write to them. Well, I don't see any option to format my DVD's with the Universal Disk Format filesystem or anything else for that matter. =(

I'm somewhat behind the times but I've never heard of being able to format a CDRW or DVDRW with any filesystem.

BTW what is the current status of UDF support in the 2.6 kernel?

Is this what you are asking about?

Well, actually (from what I've read up on it) virgin DVD+RW's need to be formated. Right now I'm reading this guys FAQ/Manual right here http://fy.chalmers.se/~appro/linux/DVD+RW/

It has loads of great info for noob linux users(like me) who want to learn how to burn dvd's. I highly recomend you look into reading it. I actually solved my problem from the info I gained from reading that website.

my dvd rom drive is slave on my seconadry ide. So to "format" or blank the dvd I typed,

$dvd+rw-format /dev/scd1

and thats it. Now the dvd disk is ready to be burned. I have been using Xcdroast to burn my cd's and dvd's and I have also played around with just using the command line to do it.

I hope this helps.
