how to find out if im using 1 or 2 slots for ram?

Is there any way that I can find out if my ram is using one or two slots? I have a laptop and don't feel like taking it apart to find out.

Thanks!

Go to the web site of your notebook manufacturer and see if they have a manual on it. Dell is good about providing manuals for ex. You can maybe find out where the memory access is. It usually is a cover to remove and not too difficult.

Assuming the memory modules have an EEPROM chip or SPD. You can use lm-sensors. Another way is to use memtest86.

size: 512MB
capacity: 768MB

bank:0

description: DIMM [empty]
physical id: 0

description: DIMM
physical id: 1
slot: A1
size: 256MB

RAM is normally really easy to look at in a Laptop, so why not just pop it open? You probably won't even have to unscrew anything. On my Dell it is just this little panle that slides open on the bottom. It took me longer to type this than it would have to confirm that both slots are used up.

I'm not at my linux box, so I can't check what the output looks like, but you could try the 'lshw' command.

lshw -class pci
