How to find Hardware you can be sure Linux will like...
 
is there a list somewhere? do some manufacturers (like of hard drives) say they like linux as well as win/mac?

Some manufacturers do discuss Linux support. Additionally, there's a link at the top of every page on here to the LinuxQuestions.org Hardware Compatibility List. Many distro sites also maintain such a list.

You can check with google as well as HCL lists like the one on this site. Some manufactures like Broadcom offer poor support for Linux. Some like NVidia offer good support. Some like ATI for newer devices are somewhere in between.

With the advent of Vista and 64 bit processors, I'm surprised how poor support is for 64 bit windows as well. We've been running 64 bit for quite a while.
