How to detect a disk / tape drives


Hi

In my linux box, i plugged one hard disk ( assume ). After plugging in, i want to see that disk drive has been detect. Through which i could see that other than kudzu. please help in this case.

Note : take consideration about tape drive also.

A quick way that came to my mind (though I'm not sure if it works for tapes) is to check if /dev has a file for it. Ok, in some (older) systems there used to be ready dev files for each device, but nowadays it seems to work generally so that when you plug a device in (say a usb flash disk), a device file for it will be created. That's one try..
