How to control several devices through one parallel port?
Hello All,
I am given a project which includes writing software in Tcl/Tk and C in Linux to interface 10 digital circuits connected to one parallel port.
Actually, I know how to interface one circuit connected to a parallel port, but how to interface 10 different circuits so that each of them knows whom each signal is to?
For example, I want to send 8 bits to circuit number 2 through parallel port connected with 10 circuits, how to specify that it will really go only to the second circuit?

I think the parport system is what you want to use, and has a decent explanation in The Linux 2.4 Parallel Port Subsystem.
You haven't said what constitutes a 'circuit'. Technically, a circuit could exist in a single bit, which would make your life relatively simple. I sense that what you really mean by a 'circuit' is a complete byte-wide or wider interface.

yes, it's byte-wide interface. i have several home-made digital circuits, which are pulse programmer, PC scope, and each of these has to be connected to one parallel port and controlled independently by PC user.

The IEEE-1284.3 standard provides for daisy chaining parallel port devices. Not sure exactly how it all works but AFAIK this is part of the linux parport subsystem. The standard allows for 8 devices.
scanners and zip drives were popular devices that were connected to the parallel port in addition to the printer.
