The best places for help on this are:

the open source unichrome (inc. km400) project
http://sourceforge.net/projects/unichrome/
(deals with X drivers etc)

the via linux forum

(don't use the via drivers!)

the epia wiki
http://www.epiawiki.org
(for patching the kernel to use DRM/DRI)
