how I can grading up the monitor-resolution in ubuntu
 

Hi,
I use ubuntu 5.10. After installation there is a maximal monitor-resolution of 1024x768 on a NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200.
The monitor is a SONY 17FS.
( HorizSync 31-64, VertRefresh 50-120 )

But never I found a place, where I can defind my monitor.
That is the question!

So I have edit ´xorg.conf´, but there is no success.
The X-Window finished with an error.

You deal with your resolutions etc. in /etc/xorg.conf. Make sure all the refresh rates etc. are correct, make sure you have sufficient resolutions in the list(s) (there might be one resolution list per colour depth, so edit them all) and remember to see which driver you're using -- the "base one" is vesa which probably works if you can't find any more specific. If you've got an nVidia card, I suggest downloading and installing the nVidia drivers for your card as it might really help..

Welcome to LQ. As bOuncer mentioned, the xorg.conf file (in the /etc/X11 directory) is what controls your video display. According to this: http://www.monitorworld.com/Monitors...iscan17sf.html your monitor should be able to handle 1280x1024, so if it doesn't, then most likely it's just that something in the xorg.conf is either missing or incorrect. If you post the contents of that file in a post here, that would be helpful

The problem was, that I cut´t define my monitor anywhere. So I study other threads and found:
That was the success! From now I have my resolution 1280x1024.

I just installed Ubuntu on my Toshiba laptop and could not get anything above 1024x768 as well. I've been scouring the internet for well over an hour trying various tips but none of them worked until I read this thread. The command
that GBunge suggested allowed me to get 1280x1024. Thanks very much!
