How do you configure to mouses, a laptop mouse and a Logitc USB Mouse
I read the tutorial that comes with Mandrake 9.1, but still can't get it to work.
In my directory /etc/X11 I have a bunch of X86Config files such as X86Config, X86Config-4, X86Config.old, X86Config.test.old. After reading your tutorial I liked the XFree 4.x method the best, but my X86Config doesn't contain that format with Section "InputDevice", but has the Section "Pointer". So does that mean I am using XFree 3.x? Or can you just replace the X86Config with the content in the X86Config-4? I tried modifying the X86Config-4 as you suggested in your tutorial on X86Config but after I restarted, it wouldn't load the graphic login and put my in a terminal window. Luckily I had backed up the config and copied it back. Can you give me some advice? I am using a laptop which when I original setup linux, I configured it with my Logitec USB mouse and it worked fine, but say if I am on a train or something I wanted to be able to use my laptop mouse. Anyways here are my files, any help you can provide would be most grateful. Regards, David Bratton Note on my XF86Config, even after I put it back to "Device "/dev/usbmouse" only my laptop mouse works now. ================== XF86Config ================== # File generated by XFdrake. # ********************************************************************** # Refer to the XF86Config man page for details about the format of # this file. # ********************************************************************** Section "Files" # Multiple FontPath entries are allowed (they are concatenated together) # By default, Mandrake 6.0 and later now use a font server independent of # the X server to render fonts. ok the one named "XF86Config" is the only one you need to worry about
go down to your Input Devices Section and make sure it looks like this Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Keyboard1" Driver "Keyboard" Option "XkbModel" "pc105" Option "XkbLayout" "us" Option "XkbCompat" "" Option "XkbOptions" "" EndSection Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Mouse1" Driver "mouse" Option "CorePointer" Option "Protocol" "PS/2" Option "Device" "/dev/psaux" Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" Option "Emulate3Buttons" "no" EndSection Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Mouse2" Driver "mouse" Option "AlwaysCore" "true" Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2" Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice" Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" Option "Emulate3Buttons" "no" EndSection on mouse1...your device can either be /dev/psaux or /dev/mouse...if one doesn't work try the other on mouse 2...your device could be /dev/usbmouse...but most likely it is /dev/input/mice...once again if one fails to work try the other find this section...and make sure it looks like this Section "Screen" Identifier "screen1" Driver "svga" Device "device1" Monitor "monitor1" DefaultColorDepth 24 Now to make both mice work at once...go to the ServerLayout section in the XF86Config file...which i noticed your's does not have so you will need to add it either make sure it reads this...or add it at the very end if it is not there Section "ServerLayout" Identifier "layout1" InputDevice "Keyboard1" "CoreKeyboard" InputDevice "Mouse1" "CorePointer" InputDevice "Mouse2" "AlwaysCore" Screen "screen1" EndSection Just remember...this will only work if you use the XF86Config you posted...not the XF86Config-4, etc. Let me know if it doesn't work |
Thanks for the feedback, I haven't tried it yet. But here is my issue, in my XF86Config, it doesn't contain the "Section "InputDevice" but contains the following below. Can I delete my current XF86Config and replace the contents of XF86Config-4 which contains the Section "InputDevice" and modify as you specified?
Thanks again for your assistance. Section "Pointer" Protocol "IMPS/2" Device "/dev/usbmouse" ZAxisMapping 4 5 EndSection |
Hello, I went ahead and modified my "XF86Config" as you specified and just changed the Section "Pointer" to Section "InputDevice" but no luck with my usb mouse, but my laptop mouse still works and I don't get thrown to a terminal and reboot. I have included some logs, maybe that can help you determine what I am missing?

first in your input devices section
go to Mouse2 the usb one change "AlwaysCore" to "SendCoreEvents" "true" then ok towards the last lines...in the serverlayout section.. right after "Mouse2 change "AlwaysCore" to "SendCoreEvents" and then give it a shot if that doesn't work go to the Input Device section Mouse2...the USB one and change the device from /dev/usbmouse to /dev/input/mice if neither thing works still i'll need you to run "cat /dev/usbmouse" from a terminal and "cat /dev/input/mice" and tell me which of the 2 displays jibberish in the terminal window when you move the usb mouse one last thing...make a copy of your XF86Config and replace XF86Config-4 with it...so they're both the same...just incase i'm missing the fac t that file is actually used |
Hey I just want to say thanks for all the help you provided. I went back to an one of the entries I tried before with Option "Device" "/dev/mouse" for the first mouse. I also made XF86Config and XF86Config-4 the same.

so....did it work?
|
yes, it was pretty late. I see that I didn't specify that in my last message to you. It worked perfectly, and once again, I appreciate all your help on this.
