Unhappy How do I setup MSN DSL modem in Mandrake 10

Please help. I'm completely new to linux. I just installed Mandrake 10 2.6 and I need help with setting up my internet connection in KDE. I have of all things Qwest MSN DSL broadband with the MSN DSL1000 broadband router. How do I set it up so that I can start updating my new toy (OS).. I started a while back in the DOS3 days and then Windows and now finally Linux. Please help me. MSN laughed at me.. they said "you want to do what with MSN on Linux?" Evidently Microsoft only wanted Windows and Mac Crap to use MSN. Surely there must be a hack of some sort. It's an always on connection. Surely there must be a way to access the net from Linux through my broad band router no matter who it is. I appreciate any help anyone can give. I'll try anything. Please put everything into as simple a term as possible. Thanks. Keith E. Whisman

How are you connecting? For example, I had a usb cable modem from my ISP which they only support under Windows. I connected it first via ethernet (which worked fine) and then through a 4 port hub/ethernet which also works and doesn't need any drivers.

Okay well always on connection means your using ethernet, so there isnt any. If you cant connect, check your nic first. Also, you need to make sure some dhcp lib is installed, mandy 9.1-10 requires that before I hookup. It will actually pull it off the cd and install it. But since your connection is always on, you wont have a single issue hooking up.

If it was the usb modem then you would have to go through some hurdles. But bring up your network config, click configure hostname, just fill out any hostname for your pc, I always set mine to the ip of my router/dsl modem. Then configure internet access will pop up. Now, set your gateway, usually the 192.168.1.1 or 10.10.10.1 dpeending on router, or modem etc. Thats when it will ask for cd 2 or 3 to install some dhcp thingy. Then click connect. All done (if your net card is set up right and working in linux)

I'm using the built in Intel 875P chipset based Intel 10/1000 ethernet port on my DFI Lanparty Pro875B MB. 1GB Dual Channel Ram Corsair TwinX1024 3200C2Pro Ram, MSN DSL1000 Router, Highpoint Raid 0 Array utilizing 2 WesternDigital 800JB 80gb hdd's, 1xHitatchi 90gb 8mb Cache drive(I've got Mandrake 10 installed on this drive although it had an option to install on my raid array which impressed the heck out of me.) Geforce FX5900Ultra 256mb Video card from PNY, Dell P1110 21" Flatscreen monitor, Logitech MX700 cordless mouse, Logitech access keyboard, undescript floppy drive, 4x2.4x12 DVD-+R/RW drive, 16x/48x DVDrom drive from Lite-on, ThermalTake Xaser III super tower in black steel with a crap load of fans and lights, Logitech THX certified Z680 5.1 Speakers hooked into my SoundBlaster Audigy 2 sound card. I'm running just about all of the best games available right now. How do I setup on internet access in Mandrake 10? Should it automatically hook into the net? do I have to specify my screen name for MSN or give it my password? or will it just automatically hook into it? Please help.. I don't know what I'm doing.. I bought Linux for dummies 5th edition but have'nt had a chance to go through it. Should I just clear everything that I've entered in my network settings in KDE and is there a way it can automatically set itself? Thanks.. Keith

Slooooooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwwwww down. Sweet system tho, we think alike... Anyhow, always on means just that, always on. No login, dial up etc. You need to set mandrake for dhcp access, in your network setup.

I'm having the same issue. I can't configure my ethernet NIC to connect to the router. I have the same setup as the thread starter, except I also have a Dlink Wireless Router DI-624 and all my PCs are hooked up to this wireless router. My Linux PC is also hooked to this router. Somehow, I just can never configure it to work/connect. Please help me, too!

Found the problem. It was the stupid 3COM NIC. I took it out and put an Intel NIC in and boom! It connects. If anyone keeps having problem and it seems like all the corrective steps have been taken, consider what your NIC is and try a different brandname and see if that fixes the problem.

Oh yeah I'm running a P4C 3Ghz processor with HT enabled. LOL forgot about that.
But anyhow, I got my net connection working.. YES!!!!!!!!! thank you all alot with the help. This is how I got mine working it may work for others with this problem as well. Anyway make sure the firewall in linux is off.. I found I could'nt get anywhere with it on. you can fiddle with it later. Then in KDE3 desktop I went to the Mandrake configuration program and selected the New Net Connection Icon and selected ADSL and DHCP checkboxes, then next whenever it asked for any names I gave it the IP address that I got from WinXP home within MYIE2 with the show IP address menu option enabled. I typed in this IP address 192.168.1.2 until it told me that I could'nt have any periods in one of the names so I entered MYPC and what do you know... it works, I'm on the net. I down loaded all of the updates for my installation and I'm happy.
I do have another problem however. I'm running a soundblaster audigy2 sound card, yet i get no sound. I have tried setting it to use the audigy driver package and the emu10k1 driver package with the same results.. no sound.. LOL..
Also I downloaded the latest Nvidia IA32 driver package but it just sits there on my desktop looking pretty.. Don't know how to install drivers just yet, anyone give a guy a hand with this stuff? As the guy holding the sign on the street says... Need Help..... I am a veteran...LOL
Hope this helps someone else.. email me if you can help me with the rest. Also I tried to reply to this thread in KDE and it kept telling me to log in to the website and I did and I had to retype everything. I finally gave in and loaded windows to reply to the thread. Maybe someone can tell me whats up with that as well. Thanks.. Keith E. Whisman cowboykeith09@msn.com

In User CP (top of the page) go to Edit Options and set option 2 & 3 in the first section to "yes" and then, in your browser, make sure that under preferences you are allowing cookies.

When KDE opens you have the Welcome to Mandrake Linux window open in the center of your desktop. click on the configuration tools Icon then click on the Software Management Icon then click on Updates Icon then choose a server thats close to you. and start downloading the updates. will take a while. I had to download then 3-5 at a time because I got errors up the wazoo when I checked to download all... Have fun. Keith..... CaptainCaveman.
Oh yeah.. I was'nt Mozilla as my browser.. Something different. Well never again..LOL.. this browser seems to work.. Still don't have sound and can't figure out how to install update graphics driver package
