How do I get an external modem working in Linux?

This would be on Knoppix. I have a Courier modem (you know, those really nice modems built by USR that are made like tanks) that uses a serial connection to the machine.

I've tried using KPPP, and it sits there forever at initializing modem.

I've been on a broadband connection at home for several years now, and this is a play box at a vacation home. I have zero *nix experience with modems.

Can somebody point me towards the light? The US robotics site isn't very helpful.

Use minicom to troubleshoot; you may need to configure minicom a bit - tell it which port the modem is connected etc.

Once you receive an OK (from the modem) on minicom, it should be easier to get the dialup working.

Well, according to dmesg, the modem is on ttyS0, and I tried that.

Now the thing dials out, connects, but just times out on logging onto network. What could that be?

when i tried redhat 9.0 i found the connection support under gnome to be troublesome, which desktop are you using, gnome or kde?

set the dialup dialogue to display a log so you can see where the problem is occurring

KDE, and the log just says that it is a timeout while logging in, and that is that. The text of the dialog error and the log of kppp are the same.
