smartmontools work with the IDE driver but not with the libata one, so the author had mentioned
that when the libata has this support he will add a new option "-d libata" to the smartmontools.
This was a long time ago.

Now (kernel 2.6.14+) libata has support for ATA-passthrough so if you use 2.6.14 or newer kernel
you have this support.
You just have to add "-d ata" with the other options you are using.

For example your command would become "smartctl -d ata -i /dev/sda"

While i use kernel 2.6.14-2-686-smp in sarge with latest libc6 libraries..
i tried your said commands..
Code:
cosmic:/home/prakash# smartctl -d ata -i /dev/sda
smartctl version 5.34 [i686-pc-linux-gnu] Copyright (C) 2002-5 Bruce Allen
Home page is http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/

Smartctl: Device Read Identity Failed (not an ATA/ATAPI device)

A mandatory SMART command failed: exiting. To continue, add one or more '-T permissive' options.
cosmic:/home/prakash# uname -r
2.6.14-2-686-smp
will i need to run 'modconf' for the libata module..which section it will be,...thanks..

Yes. It is my fault.
The ATA passthrough was included in the rcX versions of 2.6.15
I use many different patches and i was confused.
If you want the support now get the 2.6.15-rc5 which is the latest, or else in a week or so 2.6.15
will be released so you can get it precompiled from your distro repository.

SMART support for libata is on it's way - and has been so for a long time now, but it seems Garzik is ready to push it upstream to the main kernel tree soon: http://www.kerneltraffic.org/kernel-...905_325.html#1
