How change mouse type on debian sarge

I quite recently installed debian 3.1 r0a (sarge) and it seems I accidently selected a 3 button ps/2 mouse rather than a two button wheel mouse (have the three button picture in control center). Now, being no more than a n00b to linux I have no idea how to change it to the wheel mouse I actually have. If any one could supply me with what I'm sure is a simple answer here, it would be much appreciated.
Awaiting response,
PhantmShado

You will need to reconfigure your xserver via the command:
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86
That will allow you to choose a different mouse type. Alternately, you can edit the configuration file by hand. Restarting X will be necessary in either case.

You might also want to check out the sticky posts at the top of the Debian-specific forum. The one entitled "Debian Configuration Post-Install" should be of great help to you.

well I am now running dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 except it would seem that there's a good deal I didn't do in the first install as now for the first time I have to configure my video card. I have no clue what the busID for it is though I know it is in what I believe to be my only AGP slot. What should I enter as the BusID?
thanks in advance,
PhantmShado

I believe the BusID is only applicable to PPC machines. You should be able to accept the default answers until you want to change something.

so it proceeds if i just hit enter...
anywho which of the selections would get the wheel to work:
PS/2 (didnt work last time)
ImPS/2
GlidePointPS/2
NetmousePS/2
NetScrollPS/2
ThinkingMousePS/2
ExplorerPS/2

my apologies for taking so long on this but I'm truly linux clueless.

IMPS/2 is usually a safe choice. As far as getting the scroll wheel to work, confirm that in the mouse section of your XF86Config or xorg.conf file, there is a line that looks like this
Code:
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
Getting the scroll wheel to work is a very common issue, and additional information can be found by doing a quick search here at LQ. Good luck with it and Welcome to LQ! -- J.W.
