on iMacs and eMacs the CRTs are built in to the computer itself. The only way to adjust it is from OS X preferences, linux seems to have none yet it is possible to adjust brightness on laptops using the Fn key (desktops keyboards don't have this key). Without being able to adjust the brightness it is too bright to view without going blind. Linux appearently defaults to the highest possible brightness rendering it unusable for most pre-intel macs except laptops and powermacs that have external displays. This is probably an issue with all-in-one PC's also.
