how atitvout killed X

Hi, I had been running RedHat 7.2 successfully for 14 months now. No problems with XFree or video. Saturday I downloaded and installed atitvout and got it to work beautifully with the commands "atitvout -f t" and "atitvout -f l" (no other lt, ct, type commands worked, and the -f flag was necessary). Played DVD's on my TV (NTSC standard), and they looked great. Then Sunday I went to play another DVD, and with Xine running I did "atitvout -f t," which successfully flipped to TV display, but then it hung Xine and I had to do a hard restart. On restart, X failed to load, and I haven't been able to get it back up.

I have a Radeon Mobility M6 video chip with 16 MB video RAM. (Pentium III Dell laptop (Inspiron 4100) running RedHat 7.2). I've never had X problems before. Here's what I tried to do to fix the problem:

1) Xconfigure. It failed to probe anything, reported failure in finding an xserver, and produced XF86Config and XF86Config-4 files which I could email but haven't attached to save space. (I tried this many times with different settings, but mostly similar to those that worked before.) Xconfigure properly detected the video card and the video driver (radeon), but everything
else I did by hand within the Xconfigure program. (Basic configuration that worked previously was "generic laptop 1024x768" screen at 1024x768 resolution and 24 colors; other parameters like refresh rates were detected automatically.)

2) I reinstalled XFree86 4.1 from the rpms from my RedHat CD's.

3) After reinstall tried "XFree86 -configure" which acted similarly to Xconfigure.

4) Tried Xconfigure again.

5) for what it's worth, atitvout claims that the lcd is active.

I've pasted below XFree86.0.log with details of the failure to
start X.

My system is dual-boot with Windows XP, and the Windows side still has video working well, so it seems like the hardware is fine.

One other wierd thing: during boot (and in runlevel 3 in Linux), the text now only takes up about 1/2 of the screen area.

I would appreciate any help. My skills are overmatched by this problem. Thank you, Ed Boyda
