Smile Hotplug hangs if 2nd PCI card installed - SOLVED

I'm posting this for reference in case someone else searches who has the same problem.

Slackware 11-0. Kernel 2.4.33.3. P4 processor. White box. Motherboard has 2 PCI slots.

Installed two cards . Boot hangs while executing rc.hotplug

(Did a whole bunch of stuff to diagnose.)

The problem was that inserting any card in the 2nd PCI slot caused hotplug to hang. The card otherwise works (as long as I don't run hotplug).

I could send the new box back as a DOA but instead I simply

# cd /etc/hotplug
# mv pci.rc pci.rc-disabled

And I'm up and running.
