Highpoint hpt372/4 features and linux kernel
 

Hi all,

i have an ABIT kr7a/RAID with highpoint hpt372 controller.
i installed some time ago a mandrake 9.0 using the hpt372 driver
from the highpoint official site.
And it worked.
i mean that the kernel fount at least the hpt372 and found an HD attached
to it. So i know that the driver works well.

what i would like to know is :

If i buy a new identical HD (i have an IBM 120gxp 80GB)
and try to have a raid 0 or 1 disk array, will this driver WORK for that??

Is there some one that has got a RAID 0/1 array disk that works with ABIT kr7a/RAID and linux?

Yeah, the driver works with hardware raid, since you're going to set up the raid volume in the highpoint bios, all that will get communicated onto the kernel is that there's either a really big disk attached, or a that there's one there, depending on whether you're going for 0 or 1 respectively.

Alternatively, you can just use the HPT as a straight ATA device and set up software raid, its argued that software raid sometimes performs better than hardware raid on these consumer grade controllers.

As a suggestion try that your HD's use the same firmware version (if you can).

And that goes to other users reading that post: Barracuda IV from seagate need special firmware from seagate. If you try to use them (with that firmware) in an array will get low performance.

Barracuda IV users must send their HDs to seagate for replacement :( ( I think that's free).
