High Def DVD for Del Prec 380
 

My first post... so be gentle. :) I have a Del Precision 380 with Red Hat Nash version 4.2.1.6. Is there a high-def DVD player available to replace the DVD player that came with the computer? I found a BlueRay player that would go in the Del, but it only listed Windows as supported OS.

Trying to be gentle . . .

1. Have you read How To Ask Questions the Smart Way? While LQ tries to be much nicer than the mailings lists referenced, there is still a lot of good advice in this essay.
2. What is a "Del"? Is it a new company I haven't heard of? Or did you mean "Dell"? Please be more careful of your spelling & proof reading. There is just enough possibility that you really meant "Del", that I don't quite dare assume it's a mistake.
3. In any case, specs or, better, a link to specs are always helpful.
4. While we are speaking of specs, a link to specs & info on the BlueRay player you found would also be helpful.
5. What OS (i.e. Linux distro, incl. ver.) are you using/planning to use? Unfortunately,
   "Red Hat Nash version 4.2.1.6" tells me virtually nothing.
6. What searches have you done for yourself?
   • Google
   • LQ
   • Wikipedia
   • LQ or other HCL

In general ...

• optical disks "just work" in Linux.
• mfrs. don't bother to find out (& list in the specs) if their product(s) work in Linux.
• you don't have to worry about OS ver. specific drivers in Linux, once something works it usually keeps working.

Warning: I know next to nothing about BlueRay ... yet.
The good news is that your BlueRay player will probably work as a basic player, your problem will be to find playback software, & especially codecs, that can make it work completely.

Beware if it is designed for Vista & has DRM built-in -- this might make it difficult or impossible to use in Linux. (See #4 above.)
