Help with Intel8x0 Ac'97 sound
 

I am running Knoppix 3.3 on my Gateway laptop and I finally just got my ATI Radeon 9600 working now I nee help getting my sound working.

I am running a 2.6.0 kernel, and I compiled alsa in the kernel as a module. With no sound cards added.

I open xmms and I configure using the alsa, and the equilizer goes and it looks like its playing but no sound out of the speakers. I also ran alsamixer and unmuted the volumes, can't think of anything else to do.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

The SigmaTel chip prefers the OSS parameters over Alsa. You seem to have all the proper drivers installed, and you should not have to use Alsa at all. Also check to make sure that the mixer(s) that you are using is(are all) properly activated, and that your volumes are not muted or set to off. Sometimes it can take a simple thing like that to throw a wrench in the works. If you have a headphone, make sure that it is not plugged in, to disable the speakers.

So besides using the noalsa command at boot time while booting knoopix how should I get about not having alsa work???

Also my sound doesn't work if I just use the cd.

Using linux noalsa, or knoppix(if you r using knoppix) noalsa. That should be sufficient to disable alsa.
You cannot just use the CD, you need a player to process the cd sounds. Also, you need an audio cable plugged into the back of your CD machine to your sound card, to hear music.
I cannot help you with the OSS hanging up. I am not using Linux at the moment. However try a different player, to see if you get the same results. If you do, then you have a general OSS problem. If the other players work, then you have a problem with only the XMMS application. For your mixer(s). Look at all your menus and lookup 'multimedia'. There U should see the listings of the mixers installed in your system. Activate them one by one, by clicking on them. Check their setting, and bring up the volumes of the items that you will be using, like the CDROM drive, the MasterVolume, ect... Make sure that the volume for your microphone is not all the way up, or you will get a loud feedback squeal from your speakers.
What I do, is to bring up all the volumes, then I physically control the speaker volume by manually turning the pot on the speaker to bring up or down the sound volume.

Not really sure where to go to see all the mixers that are installed on my system. Can you point me in the right direction.

I am in the same boat as you are, but mixers are kmix aumix and probably alsamixer.

If you cannot find anything from the menus ( mine are k menu ( if you are using kde ) > all applications >multimedia > sound > aumix/kmix/alsamixer )

try from command line aumix /kmix/alsamixer ... should work!!

I have kmix and aumix and all the volumes are the same in both of them.

Have a look with muted / unmuted items ( bright green light says is unmuted / red in aumix or pale green in kmix = muted ).

Also push the volumes ( all of them except microphone ) to the top.

Have you Alsa installed ? if so are you using the right module ( don't sure but yours should be snd-intel8x0 ).

Send output of /etc/modules.conf or similar (can be different with Debian ).

Also give output of dmesg : any strange message ?, dmesg should give you all information concerning you card (found snd-intel8x0 irq=xx dma=xx .. )

Well after reading up more I set some permissions and changed some settings for oss, I don't get sound out of the speakers, but I get sound out of the microphone jack on my laptop. I read that some people were getting sound out of there mic jacks so I tried it and sure enough I am. I also heard that it can be bad to run audio out of the mic jacks.

If anyone has any suggestions I would gladly appreciate it
