Help with Chaintech AV710

I recently installed Debian 3.1 on my system and am trying to get a Chaintech AV710 working with it. I need the digital out of the AV710, but right now I can't get anything. I am running alsa 1.0.8. Alsa seems to properly recognize the sound card. I have unmuted all of the outputs in the alsamixer. I have headphones hooked up to the regular output, hirez out, and connected through my DAC and regardless of what I do I can't seem to get sound. When trying to play something in xmms I get an error that says "Couldn't open audio, please check that your sound card is configured properly, you have the correct output plugin selected, no other program is blocking the soundcard". This is with Alsa and output (0,0) or (0,1) selected. This happens with root and regular users, and yes everyone is added to the audio group.
