Hi, i am not sure if i am in the correct forum but i was hoping someone can help me.
I have a son VIAO laptop. I have Windows XP Home and SuSE 9.1 pro installed on 2 partitions.
rencently my laptop has been acting really strange. It will take forever for the grub menu to show up, i mean it will take about 20 mins to show up, and the whole time the disc access light woudl be on. so i switched to a new HDD (brand new HDD) and reinstalled windows from Recover CD and installed SuSE via DVD again. a few days later the same problem happened. switched back to the old HDD and it worked again..

waht gives? hard ware problem, or soft ware problem. any suggestions or answers?

Run memtest86 to make sure memory is working properly. If memory has a few problems, replace it. If there is a button battery, try replacing it but make sure you disconnect the main battery and the computer is not connected to the AC power supply.

how do i run memtest86 is it a program, or is it a command?

You will have to download memtest86 and use dd or rawrite to put it on a floppy. You can use a CD if you do not have a floppy.
