Help ! My network card disappeared

I am running Debian 2.6.22 and all was well with my network card (eth0)
Until just recently when I tried to update debian. There is no eth0 to configure?

What gives. How can it just not be thee anymore. Whn I do a lspci
it shows the network card RTL-839 Realtek Ethernet controller.

I don't understand !1 Please help

what's the result of ifconfig -a ?
Your network card driver is compiled into the kernel or as a module?
