Help Me ! Urgent !

Hi to all, i have a problem with my sound card :-(

I have recently installed Slackware 9.1 !! All went fine during the installation and system configuration exept that the system does not recognise my sound card.
My sound card is a Creative Sound Blaster PCI 128. In KDE , when i open the "info center" in menu--> system and go to sound i get these :

Sound Driver: 3.8.1a-980706 (ALSA vp.9.6 emulation code)
Kernel: Linux 2.4.22
Config options: 0

Installed drivers :
Type 10: Alsa emulation

Card config: Ensoniq AudioPCI ENS1371 at 0xd400, irq 5

Audio devises:
0: ES1371 DAC2/ADC (DUPLEX)

Synth devices: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG

Midi devices
0:ES1371

Timers:
7: system timer

Mixers:
0: TriTech TR28602

In this point i want to say that my sound card works just fine with SuSE 8, Redhat 9 and SLACKWARE 9.
When i insert an Audio cd in the drive and run KsCD , it seems that KsCD plays the cd but with no sound as output.
Please HELP me , i dont know what to do.
Thanx in advance !

Well, it almost certainly is the case that you do not have that little audio cable connected between your CD drive and your soundcard -- it's a small, flat, four (or two, if you have a new soundcard & a somewhat new CD drive) conductor cable.

Cheers!

I'm not sure if it wil help you, but my Soundblaster Live won't work with the Alsa drivbers. i had to use the SB drivers when i compiled my kernel..
After that it's working. Allthough i forgot to put in the driver for my networkcard then. *sighs*

If you got a new pc with "onboard soundcard" that miht be the reason too. If so try to disable the onboard soundcard in your bios. (also one of the things i had to do)

Kroppus:

ALSA is a sound system (a replacement for OSS that contains an emulation layer for OSS), not a driver. In most cases, with the right configuration, ALSA should be able to replace any OSS installation.

linuxlover1:

If sound works for everything except for cd-playing, AND the sound levels are set properly on all devices (run aumix in a console), I would be AMAZED (well, extremely surprised) if it weren't either:

A faulty audio cable
No audio cable
Audio cable not plugged in between correct CD drive and correct soundcard (ESPECIALLY if you have onboard sound & a soundcard)

or a variation of the above.

Cheers!

@ bluephile
Thanks for the info. It was probably the onoardcard and the sb-live that crashed.
I discovered today that i loose both of them if i enable the onboard card in XP to.

The reasone that i've thought of ALSA as drivers are that its the only packages that i ca remember seeing on my apt-get list.
My mistake

Thats strange......
Now , in the log in screen it promts me this :

"Sound server informational message:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device /dev/dsp can't be opened (No such device)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device."

and when i go to the info-center (KDE), in the Sound card section it says:

"No information available about the sound card"

I dont know what is heppenig here ! Now NO SOUND at all !

Thank you ALL for your HELP !!!

You might need to relax the permissions on /dev/dsp and /dev/mixer.

What distro are you running?

Edit: I see you are running slackware, the permissions DEFINATLY need to be changed from the stock install. 755 will be what you are after, IIRC.

I gave the appropriate permisions to /dev/mixer and /dev/dsp but the problem still exists
I've tried to run sndconfig but it seems that the command is not installed on the system. I search the /bin and /sbin but its not there, where i can find it ?
thx a lot.

to find anything, just type:
locate <whatever>

Now, a few things about locate. Locate searches a database on your computer, so that database needs to be kept updated. Especially if you just installed something, locate will often times not find it. To update your database type:
updatedb

Once you find it, then run the program. If you don't have it, I'm sure you can download it, and I highly recommend using it if you're having trouble.
