Help getting usb keyboard to work?

I installed red hat 9 on a dual boot with xp. During the install the compaq usb keyboard did not work. No problem, I switched to a ps2. After the install I reconnected the usb keyboard. No go. HID times out during boot. Is there a simple way to get the usb internet keyboard to work with both systems? I've searched for over 6 hrs. for a simple answer. Most of them seem over my head. I wouldn't know the answer if I saw it. I need some guidance out of the jungle. Any input would be appreciated. Pardon the pun. Thanks.
Cliff
