help - dual monitor in stretched mode


I have a Matrox G450 dualhead card installed and a monitor plugged into each port. The problem is that they are recognized as a single screen. That's not to say that it is set to clone. Each screen can have different stuff on it. When I click a maximize button, it stretches the window across both displays.
What do I need to change to make each monitor independent? I've tried changing a few things in xorg.conf but it only crashed my system.

Try this file below after having copied your present one to a backup, you may have to change the monitor for the second one if it is not identical to your first and if the separate screens are out of order then change the LeftOf to RightOf in the server layout.

Thanks for the reply, but it didn't work. I wonder if linux supports independent mode with my video card...
Do you need any other information to help me troubleshoot this?

It could be the matrox driver does not support separate screens as you say try starting the X server with the file I provided when it fails copy the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file to a backup then start X with your normal file once back in X post the log file here in two posts as it is rather big then we can see how everything was detected.

Okay, I tried the config file again, this time completely rebooting the computer instead of just logging out. The two screens are independent now. So independent that I can't even get my mouse to move over to the other screen. Screen 0 has everything on it like normal (icons, taskbars, etc.) but screen 1 has only a task bar and the trash icon on the desktop. Talk about weird.

I did a little more fooling around with it and got it to do a type of independent mode. Each monitor is independent of the other, but I can't drag a window to the other monitor. the mouse can find the other screen. I can't change the wallpaper on both at the same time. Taskbars are completely independent, in fact the one on the right has the new suse/kde start menu, while the one on the left has the classic one. It's almost like each monitor is using it's own config file.

Yeah that is weird the Load "xtrap" is suppossed to allow the moving between the screens. Have you tried going in every direction that is possible? Below is a new configuration file to try.

I fixed a typo in the server layout I had, removed the FontPath's that it was not finding, fixed the refresh rates and screen size to what the DDC probe gets from the monitor for the values plus added an AGP rate Option as it is only using AGP x1 right now you may want to go 2 or 8 if you know your board supports either that I found on the web at this site an unofficial Matrox support site you might want to check it out.

That is what the file I posted is supposed to do give you two separate displays that you can move between you cannot move apps between the windows though and the taskbars should be identical on both or at least that is how it works here on Debian perhaps the Suse menu is what is stopping you from getting the normal menu on both screens.

I want to be able to drag anything between the two monitors or stretch a window between them. I know it can be done because that's how I had it set up before my other card died. I just don't remember what xorg.conf looked like before I reinstalled suse.
