HELP: boot up in text-mode only?
I just installed Fedora Core 2. I downloaded NVIDIA GeForce 4 drivers for my graphics card. However I cannot install the drivers as I need to close down X. But I cannot seem to find a way to boot up in non-graphical X environment.
Please can someone tell me how to load up linux in text mode. Then afterwards change back into graphical bootup mode. |
FYI..This is from the top of my head but it should be close..
When you reboot highlight your boot option and hit e , then go to the line that has the kernel or root=label=/ line and hit e and add 3 (that is spacebar 3)to the end (should look something like this root=label=/ 3), then hit enter then b This should boot you into init 3 level and no GUI My 2 :twocents: |
you can try pressing CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE when in X. it should just kill the Xserver and go back to a black terminal screen.
|
Another way is to hit CTL+ALT+F1 and login as root. Next type init 3 or telinit 3. This will properly bring down X Window System without trashing like CTL+ALT+BKSP although if you are in runlevel 4 or 5, the X Window System will be restarted. Eventually you have to use init or telinit to change the runlevels.
