hearing audio CD's

I'm puzzled by something. I finally got to a point where I can hear sounds from my speaker using the gnome desktop. When I play audio cds I don't hear any sounds from the speakers. But If i plug in headphones to the cd rom drive I hear the music. I'm puzzled as to why i can't hear any output on my speakers. THe speaker jack is pluuged into the line out jack.
Any ideas? thanks for ppl who have responded to early questions i've had.

Have you installed that little cable connecting the CD and the soundcard? That's the first thing I'd check. Also, are the speakers powered on, and is the volume turned up? Any one of those conditions could produce the situation you describe.

As an aside, the cable isn't necessary if you use digital sound extraction, but IMO the cable is the simplest solution. Good luck with it -- J.W.

Believe it or not, a lot of people miss that one (myself included, and on more than one occasion). Anyway thanks for posting back with the followup -- J.W.
