Question Headphone jack not working in new laptop.

g'day
got a compaq presario V3000 and installed ubuntu6.06 on it. everything works fine with the exception of the headphone jack. putting a headphone casuses no difference as the sound keeps playing back from the laptop speakers and nothing comes in the headphones. has anyone encountered something like this ? the soundcard is called HDA Nvidia ( the chipset of the MB is n-force4 )

Sure - my old desktop machine does this - but the headphones work fine from the microphone jack. No idea why this should be.

Of course, you could also check that the headphone output is switched on in alsa...

nope, alsamixer shows me only 2 options for the sound card, master and PCM volume, nothing for a headphone jack. wuld it make any sense updating the alsa drivers ? this is a very new laptop afterall.

I had the same problem. It seems to be a bug in alsa. I kind of followed the instructions at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=265027 I downloaded, patched and recompiled alsa-driver-1.0.12 on kubuntu 6.10 which already has alsa-driver-1.0.12.

I now have Headphone, PCM, and Speaker sliders in my KMix window. I can adjust the headphone and speaker volume independently of each other.

It seems that this problem has been fixed in alsa-driver-1.0.13 but I have not tried it yet.

there is a fix for the sound on my web blog. as for the nvidia drivers, install them like any other nvidia cards using nvidia's proprietary drivers.

... not so fast

If you download and install from the nvidia website, this can break your xorg.conf for future updates.

Many distros package the nvidia drivers with their own installer... and then there is the chance you may have installed from a package a "freind" gave you.

So you see - many ways to install nvidia drivers. Which one you chose can matter.
