got a compaq presario V3000 and installed ubuntu6.06 on it. everything works fine with the exception of the headphone jack. putting a headphone casuses no difference as the sound keeps playing back from the laptop speakers and nothing comes in the headphones. has anyone encountered something like this ? the soundcard is called HDA Nvidia ( the chipset of the MB is n-force4 )
I had the same problem. It seems to be a bug in alsa. I kind of followed the instructions at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=265027 I downloaded, patched and recompiled alsa-driver-1.0.12 on kubuntu 6.10 which already has alsa-driver-1.0.12.
I now have Headphone, PCM, and Speaker sliders in my KMix window. I can adjust the headphone and speaker volume independently of each other.
It seems that this problem has been fixed in alsa-driver-1.0.13 but I have not tried it yet.
