HDD partitions will NOT resize

I'm trying to install ubunutu as a dual boot on a new Acer aspire one computer with XP preinstalled. It is impossible.

The desktop install CD does not even have the option of resizing the partition and using the freed space...it usually does.

The alternate CD fails when I attempt to resize the partitions either using guided partitioning or manual.

Running Gparted from a LiveCD also attempts to resize the partition but fails.

I have never had this happen before. What is the problem? Could it have something to do with the fat32 recovery partition on the hdd?

Disable the page file on XP, reboot, then defragment - then try resizing again.

Disable paging file:
Start > Settings > Control Panel > System
Click the advanced tab and click the settings button under Performance.
Click the advanced tab and click the change button under Virtual Memory.
Click No paging file boolean and save.

Defragment drive:
Start > Settings > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter
