Angry hdd: lost interrupt


I am new to the world of Linux and have aquired an old Compaq Presario 5032. I have tried to install Mandrake 9.2 and Red Hat 9.0 on it but both get hung up on the install. It hangs up at

hdd: lost interrupt

the darn thing just keeps going through that message and would go through it forever if I didn't shut it off. Is there any hope? Thnx.

It is a PII 300 Mhz
192 Mb RAM
ATI Rage Pro
Iomega Zip
CDROM
8 Gb Quantum Bigfoot TX
